A sharper kind of music trivia
Song Guess
Song Guess is a free online game for recognising a track before the full hook arrives. Start with a tiny audio clue, trust your ears, and reveal more of the recording only when you need another signal.
Audio recognition game
What is Song Guess?
Song Guess is a free browser game where you identify a recording from a short audio clue instead of answering written music trivia. Songspot begins every round with 0.1 seconds, rewards an early correct answer, and lets you reveal longer stages when the smallest clue is not enough.
The result is quick to learn but difficult to master. A drum attack, vocal texture, synth timbre or distinctive mix can be enough for a familiar song, while a less obvious track asks you to collect rhythm, melody and arrangement clues one stage at a time.
Move from 0.1 to 0.5, 2, 8 and 15 seconds when you need more sound.
Keep playing, switch difficulty and build recognition across the full catalog.

How does Song Guess work?
- 01Listen at 0.1s
Press play and pay attention to the first texture: a transient, breath, chord edge or bit of room sound.
- 02Name the track
Type a title into the guess field and choose the matching suggestion. You do not need to remember the artist first.
- 03Reveal with intention
Miss, skip or ask for a longer clue, then try again at 0.5, 2, 8 or 15 seconds before moving on.
Progressive audio clues
What do the Song Guess stages mean?
The stages are deliberately uneven. A tenth of a second tests instant recognition; the later clips add enough rhythm, harmony and melody to turn a hunch into an answer.
| Stage | What you may hear | Best question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| 0.1s | Attack, texture or a tiny vocal edge | Does this sound familiar immediately? |
| 0.5s | More of the timbre and opening shape | Is the sound pointing to an artist or era? |
| 2s | Rhythm, chord movement or a clearer phrase | What is the song’s main musical fingerprint? |
| 8s | Melody, groove and arrangement context | Which title fits the section I am hearing? |
| 15s | A generous preview without playing the full song | Can I name the track with confidence? |
Train the ear, not the search box
How to get better at guessing songs
Start with production
Before searching your memory for a title, notice the sound of the recording. A dry snare, wide synth, clipped vocal or distorted guitar can reduce the possibilities faster than a vague lyric fragment.
Separate artist from title
Recognising a voice is not the same as remembering its song. Use the artist as a shortlist, then compare the rhythm, opening shape and era before committing to a title.
Use each reveal as evidence
Do not treat a longer clue as a reset. Keep your first idea, add the new rhythm or melody, and change your answer only when the new evidence rules it out.
Recognition, not recall
Why is Song Guess so challenging?
A written quiz gives you a question and time to think. Song Guess reverses that relationship: the recording arrives first, and your memory has to catch up. The shortest clues remove lyrics and context, so you learn to notice details that are easy to ignore when listening casually.
That is also what makes the game satisfying in a group. One player may know the vocal instantly, another may catch the drum sound, and someone else may remember the exact title only after the two-second stage. You can compare instincts without needing the same taste in music.
