A music quiz measured in moments

How does the guess-the-song game work?

Songspot is a free online guess-the-song game that begins with a 0.1-second audio clue. Listen, name the track, or reveal a longer clip when you need more context. Every extra second makes the answer easier, while an early correct guess earns the best result.

  1. 01

    Listen closely

Press the central play button to hear the current clip. Headphones help when the clue is only a tenth of a second.

  2. 02

    Name the track

Type a song title and choose it from the suggestions. The round ends as soon as you identify the right song.

  3. 03

    Reveal more

Skip or miss a guess to move through 0.5, 2, 8 and 15-second clues. Try to solve it before the full preview.

Progressive audio clues

Five clip lengths, one clear challenge

The progress bar represents real listening time rather than five equal steps. A 0.1-second clue occupies only a sliver; the 8 and 15-second stages take much more space. You can switch individual stages off in the game menu, and Songspot will always restart from the earliest enabled clue.

Recognition, not recall

Why can 0.1 seconds be enough?

A tenth of a second is too short for a lyric or complete melody, but familiar recordings have a sonic fingerprint. The attack of a drum, the grain of a voice, room ambience or a distinctive synth can trigger recognition before you can explain what you heard. Longer stages gradually add rhythm, harmony and melody.

Start on Easy to learn the rhythm of the game, then move toward rarer tracks. The five difficulty levels let casual listeners and devoted music fans use the same rules without facing the same catalogue depth.

Inside the signal

What is Songspot?

Songspot is a browser-based music quiz built around recognition. Instead of asking for trivia about release dates or lyrics, the Songspot music quiz plays a real recording in carefully measured stages. Your job is simple: identify the song title while the clue is still short. There is nothing to download, and you can start playing before creating an account or connecting a music service.

Each round begins with sound rather than context. Songspot does not show the artwork, artist or answer until the track is revealed, so a correct guess comes from listening rather than visual hints. Title suggestions make spelling easier without turning the answer into a multiple-choice question. If the first flash of audio is not enough, move forward one clue and listen again.

The catalogue moves across decades, genres and familiar artists. You can play the Songspot music quiz as a shared five-song daily challenge or use Practice to shape a session around your own taste. Both modes use the same progressive audio idea, so the skill you build in one carries naturally into the other.

Two listening rituals

Keep the shared daily ritual, or turn the controls toward the music you know best.

Daily 5

One set. Five difficulties. A shared result.

Daily 5 gives every Songspot player the same five tracks for the UTC day, from Easy through Impossible. Your first official run can contribute to the leaderboard and streak, so the decision to guess now or reveal a longer clue matters. When the day is over, completed sets move into the Daily Archive for unranked replay.

Practice

Unlimited rounds, tuned to your taste.

Practice makes Songspot an open listening room. Select a genre, era or available artist, choose a difficulty and keep playing without changing the official Daily 5 result. Filters only stay visible when the matching pool has enough tracks, which keeps the combinations playable instead of offering an empty roulette choice.

How Songspot scoring and difficulty work

  1. 01 / Clue

    Shorter is stronger

A correct answer at 0.1 seconds is the sharpest result. Revealing 0.5, 2, 8 or 15 seconds gives you more musical information, but it also moves the solve farther down the clue ladder. Songspot records the stage where the title was found, so an early recognition remains visible in the result.

  2. 02 / Tier

    Difficulty changes the pool

Easy favors highly recognizable tracks; Medium, Hard, Expert and Impossible progressively test deeper catalogue knowledge. In Daily 5, harder tiers carry greater point multipliers. In Practice, difficulty is simply a way to tune the Songspot music quiz to the kind of listening session you want.

  3. 03 / Result

    First attempts stay honest

The official daily result reflects your first completed run. Archive replays and Practice rounds are for learning or fun and do not rewrite that score. This keeps the shared Songspot challenge comparable while still letting you revisit old music, test another clue length and hear the reveal again.

Songspot questions

Fast answers about access, audio, game modes and the information kept by the game.

Is Songspot free to play?

Yes. You can play the Songspot music quiz in a modern browser without paying or installing an app. Daily 5, Practice filters, results and the archive are available from the site. Your device and browser still need permission to play audio, so the first clip begins only after you press the play control.

Do I need Spotify or Apple Music?

No streaming account is required to guess. Songspot uses short Apple Music preview audio for the game, and the clip plays directly on this page when a preview is available. After the reveal, an Apple Music link may be shown as a convenient way to open the complete track outside the game.

What is the difference between Daily 5 and Practice?

Daily 5 is the shared, date-based Songspot challenge with five difficulty tiers and one official result. Practice is unlimited and lets you choose compatible genre, era and artist filters. Use Daily 5 when you want a comparable score; use Practice when you want to explore a music pool or warm up first.

Which songs can appear in Songspot?

The active pools span pop, rock, alternative, K-pop, rap and hip-hop, R&B and multiple decades, with artist filters when enough matching songs are available. The music quiz library also provides direct routes into themed pools. Availability can vary because every playable track needs a working preview and reliable answer data.

Does Songspot save what I type?

Guess text is used to match the current title and is not included in analytics. Basic game events can be measured only after you choose analytics in the privacy panel. Daily progress and results use an anonymous browser profile so the challenge can resume, while the privacy policy explains the controls in full.

Can friends play the same Songspot round?

Yes. Everyone receives the same Daily 5 set for a given UTC date, and Practice results can create a challenge link for another listener. The recipient still plays the Songspot music quiz themselves—the link carries the challenge context, not a revealed title—so comparing recognition speed stays fair.
